iPad Self Setup Steps

Section 1 - iPad Setup

If you are turning on your iPad for the first time, or if you have reset your iPad back to its factory default settings, you will need to go through the iPad setup process in order to use the iPad. Below are our recommend steps for setting up an iPad.

  1. Once the iPad is turned on and the “Hello” message appears, tap the Home button. (It is the circular button on the face of the iPad.)
  2. Select your language. (English and Spanish are the only languages our software supports.)
  3. Select your country.
  4. When on the Quick Start page, select “Set Up Manually” in the blue text at the bottom.
  5. Connect to your Wi-Fi network. (You’ll need to enter a password if the network is protected.)
  6. Tap Continue on the Data & Privacy page.
  7. On the Touch ID page, tap the blue “Set Up Touch ID Later” text, and then tap “Don’t Use” in the pop-up.
  8. On the Create a Passcode page, tap the blue “Passcode Options” text. Then tap “Don’t Use Passcode”. Then tap “Don’t Use Passcode” in the pop-up. If you decide to create a passcode though, DO NOT FORGET IT. Otherwise, if you forget the passcode, you will have to wipe the iPad and do this setup process again.
  9. On the Apps & Data page, tap on the “Don’t Transfer Apps & Data” text.
  10. On the Apple ID page, select the blue text that says “Forgot password or don’t have an Apple ID?” Then on the next Apple ID page, choose “Set Up Later in Settings”. Then choose “Don’t Use” in the pop-up.
  11. Agree to Apple’s Terms and Conditions.
  12. On the Keep Your iPad Up to Date page, tap Continue.
  13. On the Locations Services page, tap the "Enable Location Services" button.
  14. For Siri, tap the “Set Up Later in Settings” text.
  15. On the Screen Time page, tap the “Set Up Later in Settings” text.
  16. Share with Apple the iPad Analytics.
  17. Share with App Developers the App Analytics
  18. On the Appearance page, tap Continue.
  19. Tap Get Started.

Section 2 - iPad Programming

Once the iPad is set up, there are a few more steps that we recommended to complete. These steps will hide most of the apps to deter people from surfing and taping around the iPad in the event that the SecureGive app has closed. These steps will also help your iPad perform best as a kiosk.

  1. Create a folder on the iPad by dragging an icon on top of another. Once the folder is created, then drag the remaining icons into it. We typically move all apps into the folder except for Safari and Settings.
  2. Press the Home button to stop the icons from wiggling.
  3. Open the Settings app.
  4. Under Display & Brightness, move the brightness slider to about 80%, and set Auto-Lock to Never.
  5. Under Home Screen & Multitasking, turn off the "Show App Library in Dock" toggle. Also, turn off the "Show Suggested and Recent Apps in Dock" toggle.
  6. Under Accessibility > Display & Text Size > turn off the Auto-Brightness toggle.
  7. We now recommend that you do not set iPadOS updates to automatically download/install. This can interfere with the connection to the card reader. We recommend that you check for iPadOS updates and install them at least every few months.
  8. If you want to keep the kiosk application locked in place, you can set up Guided Access. You can enable Guided Access from the Settings app by going to Accessibility > Guided Access and tapping the toggle to enable it. After you launch the kiosk application, you will need to quickly triple tap the Home button (or the side button if you don't have a home button) to open the Guided Access window, and then tap Start. Then enter a six digit passcode that only your admins will know. Please do not forget the passcode. If you do, you will have to connect the iPad to a computer to fully reset it. To turn off Guided Access, triple tap the Home button, enter the passcode, and choose End.
